Cleansing & Detoxing – Part 3


bath for dog squareThe next thing you must do is decide which cleanse is right for you. There are many options for cleansing. You can focus on your colon, digestive system and gut. You can concentrate on your kidneys or liver. There are cleanses to support your blood and cleanses to get rid of parasites. You can just do an overall cleanse to support general wellness. There are deep cleanses and lighter cleanses. So how do you know which cleanse is right for you? Well, it depends on a few things.

If you have never fasted, cleansed or detoxed before I recommend taking it slow. Don’t stress your body, mind and family out by jumping in too fast or too deep right away.

The only time I feel that dramatic changes are the way to go is if you are very sick and need a fast dramatic intervention for your health. Then I believe it is best to jump all in as fast as you can.*

A time of cleansing may challenge and stretch you. However, overall it should be comfortable, and relaxing, and a time of peace.

Here are some Guidelines to help you decide which cleanse is right for you:

  • I never do a deep cleanse such as a deep liver cleanse or parasite cleanse without first making certain that my colon is functioning well. The colon is one of our main avenues of expelling waste and toxins. The last thing I want to do is pull a bunch of toxins out of my organs and into my bloodstream without making sure that they can be quickly and effectively eliminated. No matter what kind of cleanse I ultimately want to do, I always start with a good colon cleanse which also is a good general overall cleanse for your body. Then if you want to do a deeper more specific cleanse you may. For our purposes right now I am going to stick with discussing a colon/general cleanse.
  • The simple act of eliminating processed, toxic foods from our diet and eating only nourishing non-toxic foods is a type of cleanse all by itself. Our bodies are always doing the work of cleaning up. Just by giving our bodies less to clean up we are doing a gentle cleanse. This is why eating whole, healthful foods leading up to a detoxifying cleanse is such a good idea.

The next step is to chose your actual cleanse

As I mentioned earlier, there are many different ways to cleanse and detox. I am only going to discuss a few for now because I think they are the best options for most people.

  •  Water fasting – Although I do water fast occasionally for spiritual purposes, I do not recommend water fasting for the purposes of cleaning and detoxing. While cleansing your body you want to give it lots of nutrients to help aid in the work of detoxifying that it will be doing. A water fast does not do this.


  •  Juice Fasting – I like juice fasting because it is nutrient rich and gives your digestive system a chance to rest a bit. We all need rest, you know?

Juice fasting also rapidly pulls the toxins out. This is both an advantage and a disadvantage. If you eat a relatively clean diet most of the time and you want a good deep general cleansing this is a great way to go. However, if you are quite toxic, which many of us are, this will likely be too rapid a detoxification and may not be the best option for you. You only want to pull out the toxins that your body can eliminate. You do not want to simply stir up a bunch of stored toxins just to have them floating around in your blood stream.

Juice fasting does give your digestive system a nice rest because you extract the nutrient rich juice while throwing away (or hopefully composting) the fibrous part of the fruits and vegetables. However, that fibrous portion of our fruits and veggies has a myriad of benefits including “sweeping” clean the colon walls which is, of course, a great benefit when cleansing.

NOTE: Only use freshly extracted juice. You will need a juicer or access to fresh juices in order to do a fresh juice cleanse. Never use pasteurized, bottled and prepackaged juices.

  •  IMG_4131Smoothie Cleansing – Smoothie Cleansing is an excellent option for detoxing for most people whether you  eat well and have done many cleanses or whether this is your first time. I especially like cleansing with GREEN Smoothies. For the purposes of cleansing I keep my smoohies simple – just fruit and greens for a green smoothie. Just veggies and fruit for a regular smoothie. I do not add a lot of other things like flax seed, hemp seed etc. These are marvelous foods but I do not put them in a smoothie when I am cleansing. Keep It Simple. Use no protein powder and never ever use soy isolate protein powder whether cleansing or not. To be honest, I am not a fan of most protein powders in general. But that is another story for another time. When I cleanse using smoothies I personally only use TRUE Green Smoothies. A True green smoothie is made up of ONLY fruits and greens (NO vegetables –  and greens are not vegetables)

Although cleansing with Green Smoothies does not pull the toxins from your body as fast as juice cleansing, it does pull out as many toxins as most of us can effectively eliminate and it also does a fabulous job of cleaning the colon.

In addition, your digestive system gets a rest from its usual load yet it still keeps functioning. This makes it easier to transition off your cleanse. I will discuss this more when we talk about what to do after your cleanse.

NOTE: Only use fresh smoothies. You will need a high speed blender or access to fresh smoothies. You can make up or purchase a three day supple, as fresh smoothies will last for 72 hours. Never use pasteurized, bottled and prepackaged smoothies.

  • Simple Diet Cleanse – You may also eat a very simple diet of whole and living foods made up of fruits, greens, vegetables, nuts and seeds. This will not have the same cleansing effect as a juice or smoothie cleanse; however, remember I told you the body is always doing the work of cleaning up? Well, if you give your body a simple to digest, clean diet over a period of days or weeks there will be a cleansing effect just because your body can more efficiently do its task of clean up. If you eat the Standard American Diet heavy with processed and toxic foods, you will find that you appreciate enormous changes in your health, energy and toxicity level just by making these dietary changes.

 A nice modified cleanse could consist of a clean diet as described above with the addition of fresh juices and/or smoothies.

So you see, there is no one-size-fits all answer to which detoxifying cleanse is right for you. When in doubt stretch a bit but not so much that you break.

Always consult your health care professional when making any dietary changes.


How Long Should I Cleanse?

As you may have guessed there is no one simple answer to this question. I have cleansed for as little as 1 day and for as long as 40 days. The answer lies in a few simple questions:

How clean is your body at this time?

Have you cleansed before?

If you have cleansed before, for what duration of time have you cleansed?

When was the last time you cleansed?

What length of time is practical at this time in your life?

Here are my recommendations:

  • Be realistic
  • Don’t put it off. If all you can do is a 3 day cleanse right now but you would like to do a 10 day cleanse, do 3 for now and do a deeper cleanse when you can.
  • Don’t be afraid. If you have never cleansed don’t get all worried about whether or not you can do it. Maybe just start with 1 day for now. Give it a try.
  • If you are hypoglycemic or struggle when you don’t eat food, then do a smoothie cleanse or modified cleanse that keeps your digestive system working. I was diagnosed years ago as hypoglycemic and found as I ate well I did not have these hypoglycemic problems any longer. I started cleansing for very short amounts of time at first. Now I cleanse for as much as 40 days very comfortably. *This is not medical advice, but only my own personal experience. Always check with your doctor.


  • You can mix it up a bit. For example, sometimes I do a 9 day detoxifying cleanse that combines juicing and smoothies.

The first 3 days will be TRUE Green Smoohties.

The next 3 days I juice

The last 3 days I enjoy Green Smoothies again.

I will follow these 9 days up with a few days of a light diet consisting of greens, veggies, fresh fruit and light soups and of course my daily Green Smoothie which I would not be without.

I also like to do a fasting cleanse one day per week where I will drink only Green Smoothies for the day. I feel good when I do it. It gives me one day per week where meals are supper simple to prepare. And it builds self discipline into my character. I have done this off and on for many years. I do it for a while, then life happens and I get off track and stop. It is something I truly enjoy having in place in my life. For me the best day for a one day weekly fasting cleanse is Monday. However, I find most people I coach like Fridays for this. You decide which works best for you if you want to practice this habit.

Water While Cleansing:

waterWater Water Water – Water is important, even critical before, during and after your cleanse. Good clean water is just plain one of the most important things you can do for your body and all the more when you are cleansing.
