Cleansing & Detoxing – Part 4

How to break your fasting cleanse

tossed saladIf you are doing a modified cleanse that includes a clean diet of whole foods you are good to go. Your digestive system has been working right along. Just resume eating clean nutritious foods.

If you have been doing a smoothie cleanse your digestive system has also been working but at a reduced load being everything has been blended or pre-digested in a manner of speaking before entering your digestive system. You will want to ease back to whole foods with lighter fare such as salads, fresh fruit and light meals the first couple days after your cleanse.

If you have been juice fasting your digestive system will need a chance to “wake up” so to speak. You will want to ease back to whole foods over the course of about 3 days. Start with broth and smoothies the first day. Graduate to salads and fresh fruit on day two. By day three you can add more solid foods like grains and seeds etc. By day 4 you should be able to resume eating a clean nutritious whole food diet.

If you have done a simple 1 day cleanse you can basically go right back to a clean whole foods diet.

There is no exact formula for coming off your cleanse. How quickly you move back to a full whole food diet will depend on how long you were cleansing and what type of cleanse you did. However, you will want to take as much care coming off your cleanse as you did preparing for your cleanse. This is all part of a successful detoxing cleanse. You do not want to add too much heavy food too quickly and slow down or bind up your digestion. You just did something great for your body. Now carry it through to fruition.

The best way to think of it is to decide how many days you will do your actual cleanse. Then add a few days to the beginning and a few days for coming off. Add it all together and decide mentally this is all part of your cleanse. So if you are planning a 3 day juice cleanse, you will want to plan on 3 days to prepare, 3 days of actual juice cleansing and 3 days to come off of your cleanse. Get it in your mind that you are cleansing for 9 days. Otherwise when it comes time to come off your cleanse your mind is apt to say EAT!!! This is where people sometimes get off track. Decide up front what your plan will be. In addition to having the foods to juice or blend for the actual cleanse, also have your coming off menu planned and have the necessary groceries in the house. It can be challenging to shop while on a cleanse especially if you are new to cleansing.

Now is the time to get started. Make a plan and jump in. Remember, whether you have been doing detoxifying cleanses for years or this is your very first time, your plan should stretch you a bit but not so much that you break. If you have never cleansed before, one day is a great start. Give it a try. If you are a veteran then try adding something new to your cleanse like eliminating TV or radio during your cleanse, or setting aside a certain amount of time each day to meditate or just take a walk in the fresh air. This is a time to be renewed and refreshed. Embrace it.
