Which High Speed Blender is Best?

Revised February 2016

This is a long article but it will truly arm you to make your best High Speed Blender purchase. Well worth the read!

I continually watch for changing features as well as the best deals and keep this article updated to reflect those changes.

If you want all the details, read this article from beginning to end. If you want the “bottom line” read everything in red and then scroll down to “My Recommendations in Conclusion”, “Best Buys” and then “The Best Deal of All”.

I have also included a Short & Sweet summery right here:

Short & Sweet Summery:

I have tried pretty much every blender out there and there are only a few I recommend that can blend green smoothies and other foods into a super smooth consistency.

My first and favorite recommendation is the Vitamix. I love my Vitamix!!! It is a full size high speed blender that blends to a super smooth consistency. It is a solid product backed by a company with great customer service. Read below to learn which Vitamix models I recommend and why.

I also recommend two of the Ninja products. They make 2 different 1000 watt extractor units that do an excellent job of blending to a super smooth consistency. You are limited in what you can make in the Ninja units by their smaller capacity, however, for an individual blended drink or for creamy dressings and desserts they are great.

The two Ninja units I recommend are the Nutri Ninja Pro 1000  and the Nutir Ninja Auto IQ . They are basically the same machine with the same 1000 watt motor. However, the IQ has a pulse button and a couple pre-programmed buttons.

The only full size high speed blender I recommend is the Vitamix. There are several models of Vitamix that I recommend. Let me share with you what I consider to be the Very Best Deal on Vitamix then you can read the rest of this article to learn about other Vitamix models and programs I recommend.

The Very Best Vitamix Deals of All: In my opinion the best value for your dollar is a Certified Reconditioned Vitamix.  If you don’t mind a reconditioned machine this is the way to go. I would absolutely purchase a reconditioned Vitamix. They are very durable machines, the certified reconditioned models come with a 5 year warranty, and the customer service at Vitamix is fabulous. I would go for it. This is a great way to get your Vitamix and keep the cost a bit lower.

There are a number of Certified Reconditioned packages available. These are the two I recommend:

  1. The Certified Reconditioned Standard program for $379.00 . These units have it all. They are the top end machines sold at Vitamix with everything that meets my criteria for recommendation plus the pulse option and the 3 pre-programmed settings. I love this package.
  2. The Reconditioned Standard at $299.00. It does not have all the pre-programmed settings or the pulse setting like the above Package for $379.00 but it does have everything in my absolute recommended list (see below). This is a phenomenal buy!!!

If you want the dry grain cup this is still the most cost effective way to go. Just purchase the dry grain cup separately.

You can also purchase a 32 oz. wet cup separately if you want the additional cup. Which would give you all the components of the 5200 Deluxe Complete Kitchen package. (I do not personally have an additional 32 oz. cup but some people find it handy.)

Now for the Details…..

Which High Speed Blender is Best? Well that depends on what you want it to do!

Let’s get started looking at some of the most important features:

Motor:

The Vitamix is a workhorse with a 2-peak HP motor or better. There is a marginal difference between the motors offered, with the Professional series having a 2.2 peak HP motor, and some of the Creations models having a 2+ peak HP motor. My feeling is, for the average person you do not need the extra power of the professional. Any of the Vitamix machines should have more than adequate HP to do all that you want to do and more. I often joke that I think I could put a small car into my Vitamix and it would blend it up – although I have not tried it and do not recommend that you do either.

The Nutri Ninja Professional 1000 and the Nutri Ninja Auto IQ each have a 1000 Watt motor which is fully sufficient as this is a smaller personal size high speed extractor.

Bottom Line: Each of these units has a strong motor to do the job of crushing ice or frozen fruit, blending greens or just about anything else you could want to do. (well almost anything else – Don’t really put a small car in there)

Blender Cups:

Vitamix: There are different blender cups available with the different models. Let me compare them:

64 oz. wet blender cup – is my favorite as far as efficiency goes. I believe this cup is most ideally designed to blend most efficiently with high speed blending.  The drawback to this cup is that if you want your blender to fit on your countertop, you cannot place the blender cup on the base and fit it under a standard cupboard. I have the 64 oz. cup. I keep the base on my countertop and the blender cup in a cabinet just below it.

32 oz. wet blender cup – This cup works perfectly fine if you want a blender cup that can sit on the base and fit on your countertop under a standard cabinet. For me, however, having a cup ½ the size of the standard cup just does not work. I prepare food in batches. That is how I am able to eat healthy and still keep up with the demands of everyday life. When I make up my green smoothies, I make two 64 oz. blender cups full of smoothie each time I blend and place the smoothie in the fridge.  I do the same with almond milk etc. For me the 32 oz. container would not be a good option. If, however, you will be blending small quantities then this cup would work just fine.

64 oz. compact blender cup and 48 oz. compact blender cups – I was very excited about these compact cups when they first came out. I thought they would offer the best of both worlds – a larger cup and the ability to keep your blender cup and base on the countertop. However, as I have talked to people who have purchased them, I am finding that, due to the wider shape, the tradeoff is you give up some of the blending efficiency for the convenience of keeping the entire machine on the countertop. This would not be my best recommendation. The reason you are investing in a Vitamix is because it is such a highly efficient blending machine. I would not want to sacrifice any of the efficiency. However, if having the cup in a cabinet  would lead you to use your Vitamix less then go with a cup that will fit on your countertop. Better a bit less efficiency in a machine you use than a highly efficient machine under the cabinet that you never use.

32 oz. dry cup – The dry cup is for grinding grains. I originally purchased my Vitamix without the dry cup and then wished I had purchased it. You can purchase it separately at a later time. I was blessed to be gifted with one when my mother-in-law upgraded her Vitamix which she had for many many years. I watch for deals that offer the dry cup at a discounted package price and will always post them here when they come along.

Nutri Ninja Pro 1000 generally comes with 3 Nutri Ninja Cups: 12 oz., 18 oz., & 24 oz.

Nutri Ninja Auto IQ is sometimes sold with the same 3 cup sizes as the Pro 1000 model and sometimes it is only sold with one cup.

One other thing to watch for on the Vitamix blender cups is the soft grip feature. Doesn’t sound like  a big deal, but I really notice the difference. As much as I use my Vitamix the soft grip is a feature I like a lot and would be willing to pay some extra money to get.

Vitamix, Nutri Ninja Pro 1000 & Nutri Ninja AutoIQ all have bpa free cups

NOTE: If you locate a used Vitamix on Ebay or Craig’s List or somewhere like that make certain you are getting one of the newer blender cups. The newer cups are BPA free which is something you will want. You can tell the difference. The older cups are made of that harder plastic that tends to get little stress cracks over time. The newer cups are made out of the plastic that almost feels a little rubbery. Also the newer cups have a much nicer fitting lid with easy to open side flaps.

Bottom line – For Vitamix I like the newer 64 oz. full size, non-compact blender cup as my first choice. Second choice is the 32 oz. wet blender cup. The 2 Ninja products come with standard cups so there is no decision to make.

Controls:

The last thing to consider, other than color, is which controls are important to you.

On/Off button – All the Vitamix products have an on/off button, as does the Nutri Ninja Auto IQ. The Nutri Ninja Pro 1000 has no real controls as such. You simply put the cup in place, turn it into position and push down on the cup. When you quit pushing down the machine stops running.

Variable Speed – Neither of the Ninja products have variable speed. Some Vitamix blenders have variable speed and some do not. Whether or not variable speed is important to you will depend on what you use your Vitamix for. If you are just making smoothies you don’t necessarily need it. I make nut and seed cheeses, nut butters, seed crackers, soups and foods where I use my variable speed often. I personally would not want to be without variable speed. My recommendation is go for the variable speed. Your Vitamix is going to last you a very long time and even if you do not use it now you may in the future. It is available on many of the blenders and you do not have to buy the top of the line to get it.

Bottom Line: Unless you know for certain that you will never use a variable speed setting I would get it. Exception: I own both a Vitamix and a Nutri Ninja Pro 1000 and in that case I don’t care that the Nutri Ninja does not have variable speed. I will explain further when I sum up my thoughts.

Pulse Setting:

I do not personally have a pulse setting. I can achieve similar results using the variable control. However, I can see where it would be nice to have a pulse option. If I had to choose between variable and pulse I would choose variable. Pulse would be a nice extra if it didn’t cost me a lot more money.

Pulse Setting is available on some Vitamix models and on the Nutri Ninja Auto IQ. It is not technically available on the Nutri Ninja Pro 1000 model, however if you push and release you get the same effect.

Bottom line: Choose variable over pulse. If you have variable you don’t need pulse, but it would be a nice to have both if it doesn’t cost a lot more.

Pre-programmed settings:

The Nutri Ninja Pro 1000 does not have any pre-programmed settings

The Nutri Ninja Auto IQ has 2 pre-programmed settings: Blend & Ultra Blend

There are some pre-programmed settings available on some of the Vitamix machines. These include settings for simple cleaning, smoothies, frozen desserts, soup, and puree recipes.

These settings allow you to press a button and walk away. Your blender will shut off on its own when it finishes running the program.  This is a personal preference. These blenders are super simple to use without the pre-programmed settings but they are a nice added feature.

Also, I would recommend these Pre-programmed settings if you think they would make a big enough difference in how often you use your High Speed Blender. That could make it definitely worth it!

Bottom line: The pre-programmed settings are nice to have but not necessary.

 Accessories:

Tamper

All Vitamix blenders come with a tamper and it is a must have item. It is designed perfectly to fit into the blender cup just far enough to push your whole foods in but not so far that it hits the blade and gets all ground up – unless of course you use the tamper without the blender cap on. Then it goes in too far and gets all ground up. I speak from personal experience. Oops! When my sister called Vitamix to order a new tamper for me (nice sister) they sent her one for free. Love the customer service at Vitamix!

The Ninja Units do not come with a tamper. They will tell you that you don’t need one but I have found that not to be true. It is, however pretty easy to just turn off the blender and open it up and use a spatula. Not as convenient as using the tamper with the Vitamix blender still running, but very doable.

Because I use my blender a lot for many different things, using the tamper is much more convenient than having to stop the blender and use a spatula. I would not want to be without it. However, it is very doable to turn off the blender and use a spatula. After all, that is what I do with my food processor. So final word is – Yes I like having the convenience of the tamper (which only comes with Vitamix) but it would not necessarily be a deal breaker for me.

 Recipe books

There are different recipe books that come with different Vitamix packages. Every recipe book I have received from Vitamix has been great, but I would not order my Vitamix based on which recipe books come with it.

Bottom line: There must be a million great recipe books available on the market. I would not let this dictate which machine I purchased.

Spatulas and cutting boards

Nice if included, but not necessary.

Individual Drinking Cups

Both of the Ninja products I recommend come with individual drinking cups. There are Vitamix units that have drinking cups but among the units I recommend here none come with individual drinking cups. To me this is not a big deal. There must be a million different travel style cups out there. I have a Nutri Ninja with individual drinking cups and I still use a mason jar with a lid for my traveler. This is definitely personal preference. If it would make you more likely to take your smoothies with you then I say go for it.

My Recommendations in Conclusion:

My favorite blender is still the Vitamix. I would give up a lot of my appliances before I would give up my Vitamix. However, I own both a Vitamix and  Nutri Ninja Professional 1000. Below I will break down my recommendations among my favorite Vitamix models. However, I believe the Nutri Ninja Professional 1000 and the Nutri Ninja Auto IQ are great options at their price points.

I cannot speak to the long term quality of the Ninja products as they have not been around long enough to have a long time track record. I can tell you the Vitamix is built like a tank and their customer service is fabulous.

The Nutri Ninja Professional 1000 and the Nutri Ninja Auto IQ are in there own category. They are small personal size extractors. I use my Nutri Ninja Professional 1000 to make small batches of creamy foods such as creamy dressings and raw chocolate pudding. I can make these items in my Vitamix but I like the Nutri Ninja because the blade twists off and with the small cups and the blade that comes out it makes it much easier to scoop out thick creamy items rather than trying to scoop to the bottom of a tall blender cup.

The Nutri Ninja can be a great place to start if you want to make great individual whole food juices or smoothies in small batches. However, it is limited in what it can do beyond that simply based on its size. It is very reasonably priced so it is a good place to start if you want to get started without the big investment of the bigger blenders and you basically want it to make individual whole food juices. Then if you want to invest in a full size high speed blender at a later date I am quite sure you will find a use for your Nutri Ninja in your kitchen. I owned my Vitamix for years before I purchased the Nutri Ninja. I use them both for different things and enjoy having both.

So in conclusion: I love my Vitamix. I can blend just about anything in it and I do. I like the large cup for making my green smoothies because I make at least one full blender cup and keep the rest in the refrigerator. For me time is always something I am working to use as efficiently as possible so I generally make up several batches of green smoothie at one time. I drink some, refrigerate some and freeze some. So the small cup on the Nutri Ninja would not work for me.

I think either the Nutri NinjaProfessional 1000 or the Nutri Ninja Auto IQ are a terrific units in addition to your full size high speed blender or as a starter blender for making small batches of whole food juices.

Below I break down for you my favorite Vitamix blenders and the best deals on them:

Best Buys on Vitamix:

My best recommendation as the best overall value for your dollar is a certified reconditioned Vitamix. However, if you do not want a reconditioned blender there are lots of other great choices.

  • If you want it all, go for the 5200 Deluxe Complete Kitchen package. This gives you the 5200 blender with the 64 oz. wet cup, plus a 32 oz. wet cup, a 32 dry cup, the spatulas and cutting boards.
  • If pre-programmed buttons are what you want go for the Vitamix 6300 or the Profession 500 series. They are basically the same machine. They have a pulse button as well as 3 pre-programmed settings. (The Professional Series 750 has 5 programmable settings but does not meet my recommendation criteria because it has a compact cup.)

The Best Vitamix Deals of All:

Updated February 2016 – New Reconditioned Programs from Vitamix allows you to purchase a reconditioned machine that meets all my recommendations now for $299.00 instead of $379.00

The Best Deal of All: $299.00 or $379.00 – In my opinion the best value for your dollar is a Certified Reconditioned Vitamix.

There used to be only one of the packages I recommended but Vitamix made an exciting change to their reconditioned packages that now allows me to recommend two of the reconditioned packages to you. I used to only recommended the Certified Reconditioned Standard program for $379.00 . These units have it all. They are the top end machines sold at Vitamix with everything that meets my criteria for recommendation plus the pulse option and the 3 pre-programmed settings. I still love this package.

However, now Vitamix also offers another reconditioned package that I like, The Reconditioned Standard at $299.00. It does not have all the pre-programmed settings or the pulse setting like the above Package for $379.00 but it does have everything in my absolute recommended list. This is a phenomenal buy!!!

If you want the dry grain cup this is still the most cost effective way to go. Just purchase the dry grain cup separately.

You can also purchase a 32 oz. wet cup separately if you want the additional cup. Which would give you all the components of the 52oo Deluxe Complete Kitchen package. (I do not personally have an additional 32 oz. bup but some people find it handy.)

Hope this helps in your search for the best high speed blender.
