Higher Weight / Higher Risk

The American Institute for Cancer Research reports:

“There Is A Strong Link Between Excess Body Fat & Increased Cancer Risk

Based on research The American Institute for Cancer Research helps fund, evidence is clear that weight can affect your risk of developing cancer. Our experts estimate that about 1/3 of cancers that occur every year in the U.S. could be prevented by maintaining a healthy weight, being physically active and eating a nutritious diet.”

This is a difficult and rather touchy subject. None of us wants to hear this and I know many people who are not over weight get cancer. However, the studies show and the evidence is overwhelming. There is a conection between being overweight and an elevated risk for many cancers.  No one wants to be overweight. In many cultures, especially western cultures, like the U.S where I live, it can be tough to maintain a healthy weight. We are a culture that is consumed with food. Most social activities revolve around food. And we are a culture that has learned to eat a lot of junk that really shouldn’t even qualify as food. But we have grown up eating it so it seems normal to us. Many try over and over again to lose weight following fad diets only to find ourselves right back where we were and feeling more defeated than ever. But the evidence is clear – Higher Weight means Higher Risk. We would be remiss to ignore this fact. Maintaining a healthy weight is one of the best things we can do to avoid a cancer or to avoid a recurrence.
